This is the personal website of Andrew Mullins. I'm currently a masters student in the Statistics Department at the University of Georgia. In the past, I've worked as a data fellow at Achievement First and an intern on the Business Optimization team at Puppet Labs.

I am primarily interested in applied statistics and machine learning. Effective communication and visualization of results is extremely important to me, as is creating reproducible code and analyses. I enjoy thinking about problems from almost any domain but a few areas that particularly interest me are education, climate, social issues and basketball.

I expect to graduate in May 2016 and am actively looking for opportunities to work as a data scientist after that. If you're interested in contacting me, please reach out via email or twitter.

Professional Information

Projects

Brief descriptions of some of the projects I've worked on. Because of legal restrictions, I am not able to share comprehensive examples of work that was done for Achievement First.

data-heroes
Data Heroes Training

I worked with a colleague to pilot a training program designed to teach selected Achievement First employees how to visualize and analyze data using Tableau and our SchoolZilla data warehouse. The program consisted of three 4-hour hands-on sessions, several homework assignments and a culminating project.

sam-reports
SAM Reporting

As part of Achievement First's ground-breaking teacher development and evaluation system, Teacher Career Pathway, I designed, created and managed the deployment of a number of reports surfacing student achievement and teacher impact on student growth. The reports were built using Tableau with a SQL Server back-end.

data-collection
PBA/DRP Collection and Reporting

Developed a SQL-based data collection system to save time and ensure accuracy of high-stakes student achievement data. Interviewed potential users, learned new technology and developed policy for effective usage.

Pre-SAM Dataset Overhaul

Designed and configured a Microsoft SQL Server database that replaced an extremely manual and high-stakes data assembly process with an automated system. This turned well over 200 hours of work into a roughly four-hour process. Dramatically streamlined the collection of data needed to calculate 90+ student achievement measures, systematized the organization's view of assessment data and how it is warehoused and allowed Achievement First to directly connect processed data to Tableau reports to instantaneously calculate results. This project freed up the team to tackle more mission-critical work and focus on developing more robust metrics.
